Spaniard Alejandro Valverde won the 'Golden Bike' award for the best cyclist in 2018. The 38-year-old world champion received the award in Gorraiz in the Basque Country, where he trains with the Movistar team.

30 września w Innsbrucku Valverde zdobył swój siódmy medal, ale pierwszy złoty, w wyścigu elity o mistrzostwo świata. W tym sezonie wygrał ponadto cztery wyścigi etapowe: Dookoła Walencji, Dookoła Katalonii, Abu Dhabi Tour oraz La Route d'Occitanie, a także dwa etapy we Vuelta a Espana.

Nagroda "Velo d'Or" jest przyznawana od 1992 roku. Valverde jest trzecim Hiszpanem na liście laureatów, obok Miguela Induraina (1992-93) i Alberto Contadora (2007-09, 2014).

W ubiegłym roku plebiscyt wygrał Brytyjczyk Chris Froome, a przed dwoma laty wyróżniono Słowaka Petera Sagana.
